India smartphone shipments fall 20% in Q3 2026, worst quarter in a decade

Counterpoint Research says India's July-September 2026 smartphone shipments dropped 20% year-on-year to their lowest third-quarter level in ten years, with the sub-INR 20,000 segment nearly halving as record memory prices pushed costs up. Samsung reclaimed first place on a 17% share after nine quarters, while Indian brands lifted their combined share from 2% to 7%. Counterpoint expects another round of price rises after the festive season and a full-year 2026 contraction of around 13%.

Reported, not announced. The details below come from press reports rather than a manufacturer announcement.

The details

  • Counterpoint Research reported on 23 October 2026 that India's smartphone shipments fell 20% year-on-year in the July-September 2026 quarter, the lowest third-quarter level in a decade.
  • Shipments priced below INR 20,000 (about $210) fell 47% year-on-year as rising costs pushed models into higher price bands, with the weakness most pronounced below INR 15,000 (about $158), where buyers held on to existing phones longer.
  • Counterpoint attributed the slump to record-high memory prices lifting device costs, alongside softer consumer demand and OEMs holding back channel inventory ahead of the festive season.
  • Samsung returned to first place with a 17% share, its first quarter at the top in nine quarters, and was the only top-five brand to grow year-on-year, carried by the Galaxy A series and comparatively restrained price increases.
  • vivo, excluding iQOO, placed second on a 16% share, Oppo third on 12% with triple-digit growth above INR 20,000, and Xiaomi including Poco fourth on 12%, leading the INR 10,001-20,000 band.
  • Indian brands lifted their combined share from 2% to 7% year-on-year as more domestic brands expanded their presence, while Ai+ was the fastest-growing brand overall at 306%, Transsion's itel grew 88% on its 4G portfolio in the sub-INR 15,000 segment, and Google grew more than 50%.
  • Apple's iPhone 18 Pro series recorded initial sales nearly 20% higher than the iPhone 17 Pro family, while MediaTek led chipsets with a 45% share and UNISOC saw a resurgence as brands chased profitability in the lower tiers.
  • Counterpoint Research Director Tarun Pathak expects India's smartphone market "to shrink by around 13% in 2026", with rising component costs likely to trigger another round of price hikes once the festive sale ends and 2027 also starting on a challenging footing.
  • Omdia, measuring the same quarter separately, put India's Q3 2026 shipments at 35.8 million units, down 26% year-on-year and the lowest third-quarter total since 2016.
  • Omdia ranked Samsung first on 6.7 million units (about 19% share), ahead of vivo on 6.4 million (down 34%), Oppo on 4.9 million (down 24%), Xiaomi on 4.7 million (down 28%) and Apple on 3.9 million, and said Chinese brands' combined share slipped to about 68% from 75% a year earlier, with a further low-single-digit decline expected in 2027.
