Apple confirms iPhone Duo inner displays crack, offers AppleCare replacements

Days after the iPhone Duo went on sale on 23 October 2026, owners began reporting inner screens cracking along the centre of the hinge, followed by a row of pixels stuck glowing white. Apple has now acknowledged an issue on what it calls a small number of units and told affected buyers to contact AppleCare for a replacement, without naming a cause. iFixit's teardown, which scored the Duo a provisional 5/10, points to the way the central hinge support holds up the panel at the fold.
The details
- Apple told 9to5Mac on 26 October 2026 that it is aware of "an issue impacting the inner display on a small number" of iPhone Duo units, and that owners who hit the problem should contact AppleCare for a replacement.
- Apple's statement gives no cause for the failures; 9to5Mac reports that AppleCare+ coverage is not required for the swap and that buyers who bought through a carrier should go to AppleCare directly rather than the carrier, which generally lacks replacement stock.
- The iPhone Duo went on sale on Friday 23 October 2026, and 9to5Mac reported on 25 October that how long the inner screens took to crack varied, with a couple of owners saying theirs failed during the first setup process.
- 9to5Mac said it had seen roughly ten unique cases, most of them posted to the r/iPhoneDuo subreddit, and warned that some Reddit reports were fake or AI-generated while others appeared genuine.
- The affected units fail in the same pattern: a crack running down the centre line of the hinge, after which a horizontal row of pixels is left stuck glowing white.
- GSMArena reported on 27 October 2026 that owners felt resistance from the hinge as they opened the phone and heard a popping sound, with the inner display damaged immediately afterwards.
- iFixit's teardown, published on 25 October 2026, gave the iPhone Duo a provisional repairability score of 5 out of 10 – its highest for any foldable phone so far – and measured two batteries totalling 19.1 Wh, at 11.6 Wh and 7.5 Wh.
- Using CT scans and a 3D model of the hinge, iFixit found the reported breaks cluster near the transition from the flex-cable gap to the central hinge support, and hypothesised that the centre support bar may not drop far enough when the phone closes, leaving the folded display pressing onto it.
- iFixit reported on 20 October 2026 that Apple charges $999 out of warranty for an inner display, $379 for the outer display, $229 for the battery and $199 for the back glass, falling to $99, $29, $0 and $29 with AppleCare; the equivalent inner-display repair is $568 on the Pixel 11 Pro Fold and $579 on the Galaxy Z Fold 8.
- Apple's US store lists the iPhone Duo at $1,999 for 256GB, $2,199 for 512GB, $2,599 for 1TB and $3,199 for 2TB in Night Sky and Star White, with a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display.
