TCL puts its paper-like screen tech on AMOLED in the P80
Announced at IFA in Berlin, the P80 Ultra and P80 Pro are TCL's first NXTPAPER phones to use an AMOLED panel. European prices start at 349 euros for the base P80.
The details
- TCL announced the P80 series at IFA 2026 in Berlin, which ran from 4 to 8 September.
- The P80 Ultra and P80 Pro are the first TCL phones to combine NXTPAPER with an AMOLED panel; the base P80 has the same size and resolution screen without NXTPAPER.
- The Ultra and Pro use a 6.83-inch 1.5K AMOLED at 120Hz.
- TCL quotes peak brightness of 3,200 nits and blue light output as low as 2.9%, with minimum brightness down to 1 nit.
- The polarization rate of the circular polarized light layer is quoted at 90%, up from 57% on the previous generation.
- TCL says colour accuracy is delta-E below 1 with full DCI-P3 coverage.
- The Ultra and Pro have a physical NXTPAPER key for switching reading modes.
- The P80 Ultra adds a 50MP telephoto zoom camera.
- The Pro uses a MediaTek Dimensity 7400 Elite with a 5,800mAh battery and 45W charging.
- The base P80 uses a Dimensity 7300 Elite with 8GB RAM, 128GB storage, a 50MP main camera with OIS, an 8MP ultra-wide, a 32MP front camera and a 5,000mAh battery.
- TCL said Europe gets the series first; a US release is not expected before 2027.
Pricing
- TCL P80 Ultra 8GB/256GB: EUR 549
- TCL P80 Pro: EUR 429
- TCL P80: EUR 349
Why it matters
NXTPAPER has until now meant giving up AMOLED contrast for eye comfort. Putting both on one panel, with a hardware switch between them, is the first version of the idea that does not ask buyers to choose.
